You can begin this route from either north or south, with each bridleway offering something a little different. Joining from the south, you will leave Pont-Rhyd-y-Clyff and quickly move onto a shady, wooded track along the riverside, crossing the river about a kilometre in. The north track is a slightly shorter trail and the two meet in the middle at the crook of the valley at Cwmdu-Isaf.
From here, it’s a steady rise with the stream to your right, climbing to the tree line at the hill’s top. This open land is actually a unique habitat, since its dry acid grassland offers a fantastic refuge to ground nesting birds and reptiles, such as skylarks and lizards.
The route crests the hill before zigzagging its way down the other side through the woods, between clearings which offer phenomenal views until you flow out into Garw beside another wooded river, lending a lovely symmetry to the day’s ride.
*Approximate time by horse. By bike will be quicker.
