Starting in the small village of Aberthin, leave the village on the road heading south, following it until you cross over the A48. When you hit the next road, turn left and head up the long, shady road onto St Hillary Down. It’s a steady climb, but the trees on either side give it a secluded, quiet feeling as you draw further and further away from civilisation.
At the peak of the hill you will find ‘The Clump’, a copse of trees that marks the top. Heading right, ride down the hillside into St Hillary; another pleasant village with a church that is well worth a look. Cross right through and out the other side until you reach the Old Vicarage, where you will want to take the right hand fork in the road. This will bring you round in a pleasant curve past green fields until you hit a crossroads.
Take another right and continue on that road until Pancross Farm, about 2.5 kilometres along. Here you want to cut left, rounding into a valley where you will find the village of Llancarfan. Ride down the hill, a steep incline, into the village and back out and up the other side. It’s a moderate incline to the top, where you will follow the rim of the hill around into Moulton to join the road to Dyffryn.
Unlike the roads up until this point, there is regular traffic on this one. Pay close attention to the road and keep an ear out for anything else coming along it. When you come under the shelter of the trees in Dyffryn, you might want to stop in to explore, or head to the café. Make your plans with it as a destination and it would make a great location to arrange transport around, giving you a base from which to wait for collection.
Continuing up the long stretch of road to St Nicholas you will feel the route winding to its close. Once at the extremely busy A48, turn left and follow along it towards the edge of the village, then veer right and off behind the village onto a wooded green lane.
The day’s ride holds one more picturesque ride before the end, taking you down into a valley lush with streams and little woodlands, cutting up through Peterston-Super-Ely and across beside the river into St George’s. From here, it’s one last ride south, bringing you to the downs and closing out the day.
