- Ask an adult to pre-cut the wooden shapes in the diagram. (We sourced pre-cut nest box kits from the Nestbox Company)
- Drill holes in the base to allow drainage from the box
- Decide which size entrance hole to create depending on which bird species you would like to visit (see attached document)
- Using the appropriate hole saw attachment ask an adult to create the entrance hole in the front of the box
- Sand down any rough edges
- Nail the sides onto the front of the back piece
- Slide in the base and nail it in place
- Nail the on the front of the box
- Screw the lid on using 2 screws. This will allow easy removal of the roof to clean out the box
- Attach the damp proof membrane to the back of the lid like hinge, this will protect the nest by allowing rain to run off the roof
- Attach the correct size steel woodpecker guard to the front of the box (optional)
Use the attached document to correctly position the nest box in your garden.
Ask an adult for help when using any tools.
